I just read an interesting article about how to survive in an earthquake and I thought that I would share what I learned.
Did you know that the things that you were taught in grade school will get you killed in an earthquake? Don't hide under tables or beds or stand in doorways. When the ceiling collapses, the stuff that you are hiding under will be crushed, and you along with it. And if you are in a doorway, that could collapse forward/backward and the ceiling will crush you, or if it falls sideways, it will cut you in half! Crazy! (I always thought a doorway was the best thing.)
Instead, what I learned is that you should hide NEXT to something sturdy (like a couch, or the bed or whatever) and curl up in the fetal position. When the roof falls down onto the stuff you are hiding next to, it will fall on top of it and then it leaves a space next to it. A "triangle of life" is what the expert called it. But that really makes sense to me.
So don't hide under stuff. Curl up next to it and you just might make it out alive. Or better yet... get out of the house all together and away from falling stuff.
Now you know. And we will all live when the Wasatch Fault finally breaks loose and crushes everything in the Salt Lake valley.

but what did they say about hiding in a bathtub? because that's my plan... That and always wearing a helmet for protection.
I work in an OLD building downtown, which is next to an even older building that is 11 stories high, and on a weekly basis, I think about if there were an earthquake the entire old buildings would come crumbling down on me.
There are two things I remember about my 7th grade Geography class (I have an awful memory and can't believe I even remember these two things). First, my teacher was pregnant and she would rub her stomach all day long while she taught. I probably remember this because it was like hypnotic and all I would do is stare at her belly being rubbed while she taught. Second, I remember she said that we WOULD be getting a major earthquake soon... again this is like over 10 years ago, and soon hasn't happened, but that doesn't mean the fear is gone! I am still so nervous when that earthquake is gonna hit, because, you know, my 7th grade teacher said it would!
